Building Your Contractor Network
Key Points
Network = your most valuable asset. Other contractors, clients, recruiters, peers. Built slowly over years. Intentional effort: events, online communities, staying in touch. Network = opportunity source.
Types of network contacts
Other contractors: Peers, knowledge sharing, referral sources ("I'm fully booked, here's someone good"). Non-competitive referrals valuable.
Past clients: Repeat work, references, introductions. Best relationships. Stay in touch (quarterly email, "hope you're well").
Recruiters/agencies: Work sources. Build relationships. "I liked working with you. Keep me in mind for future roles." Repeat placements from good recruiters.
Peers in related fields: "I do frontend, they do backend. We refer clients to each other." Complementary skills = referral relationships.
Building network: online
LinkedIn: Connect with everyone you work with. Stay active (post, comment). LinkedIn algorithm surfaces active members. Helps recruiters find you.
Communities: Reddit (r/freelance, r/entrepreneurs), Discord servers, Slack communities in your field. Participate genuinely. Help others, answer questions. Reputation builds.
Twitter/X: Share knowledge, engage with peers. Less formal than LinkedIn. Good for thought-leadership.
Building network: offline
Meetups: Local tech meetups, industry events. Go monthly. Meet people face-to-face. Follow up: "Great conversation at meetup. Let's stay connected."
Conferences: Annual spending on 1-2 conferences. Network heavily. Exchange details. Follow up afterward.
Mastermind groups: Small group of contractors/freelancers meeting monthly. Share challenges, opportunities, advice. Builds strong bonds.
Staying in touch
Quarterly email: "Thinking of you, hope things going well. If you need [your service], I'm available. Also, if you know anyone needing X, send them my way."
No spam: Don't email constantly. Quarterly is right. Make it brief, genuine. Not "buy my service" but "let's stay connected."
LinkedIn:** Follow their posts, comment occasionally. Keeps you visible without intrusive.
Network pays dividends over time
Year 1: 10 contacts. Year 2: 30 contacts. Year 3: 100+ contacts. By year 3, you have enough network that work comes inbound. Referrals, recruiters calling, clients recommending you.
Most valuable asset after 3+ years of contracting: your network. Worth more than your skills (you can learn new skills). Network is harder to replicate.
